Glass Tile Backsplash

Creating a glass tile backsplash adds so much appeal and character to a kitchen. There are so many glass tiles on the market, that the decision can become a difficult one, though. The more that is known about this type of tile and some design features, the easier the purchasing will be.

First of all, there are some good reasons to choose glass over ceramic tile. Glass will resist mold, mildew and stains better than ceramic as it is not porous. In a room like a kitchen, especially near a stove, glass is a great option. Another huge pro is that with all the glass options, the creation of the tile design is only limited by the imagination. A glass mosaic tile backsplash can incorporate  both the style of the home and the homeowner to become a work of art. Another reason to choose glass is the way it reflects light. Not only will make it the space look bigger, but will add a dramatic flair to the room. Think about entertaining with votive candles scattered across the counter, their flame bouncing off the glass tile backsplash.

A downside of glass is that is more expensive than ceramic, but a good use of it if money is tight is to use it as an accent in the backsplash. This can be runner or border around the entire backsplash, or a feature in one spot to highlight an area. Tiles of glass can also be intermixed with the ceramic to create an exciting, bold pop. It may work to invest a smaller amount of colorful glass tiles as an accent.

Another feature to think about when buying these tiles is what size and shape would be best. The bigger tiles make for a simple, clean look, while the smaller ones are beautiful in a mosaic glass tile backsplash kitchen or a solid color over the entire backsplash. Some of the popular larger ones are subway tiles, which will look good in almost any style kitchen. If using the smaller tiles on the entire backsplash, it is best to stick with a monochrome look. Different hues will be alright, but it may look too busy if too many colors are used.

With so many stores carrying glass tiles these days, the prices are almost as boundless as the combinations. The bigger home improvement stores usually carry glass tile at affordable prices but may not have the variety the higher end tile stores will have. However, the quality and variety found in the other stores may be worth it if budget allows. Take a look around, decide on how the tile would best be used, and then make the final decision.
